Shareguard File Transfer
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have to sign up and create an account?
To provide you access to our service anywhere from any device, we need to hold your keys to your files for you in your account. All these keys — and our files — are always encrypted at rest and in transit.
We cannot access any of these ever. You control access with your personal and secret master encryption key, in addition to your login and password.
Why is there a separate master encryption key in addition to my password?
This is an additional security measure. We also provide Single Sign-On (SSO) logins. If your social or comopany account login were ever compromised, your personal secret master encryption key is still required to access your data.
What happens if I don’t remember my master encryption key?
We have no access to your master encryption key and cannot restore it.
If you lose it:
- You will no longer be able to access any previously uploaded or shared files.
- You can set a new master encryption key and re-upload any files you wish to transfer.
Recommendation: Store your master encryption key securely (e.g., in a password manager, your browser, or use a strong but memorable key).
Is there a backup of my files uploaded or shared with me?
No, by design. We are a file transfer service, not a storage service. Backups introduce additional security risks which we avoid. Files are held temporarily and expire after the transfer is complete.
We use high-availability cloud services for reliability. If files are ever corrupted or lost, you will need to re-share the affected files.
Is Shareguard File Transfer integrated into commercial email solutions to handle large attachments?
Not yet, but we can provide such integrations for companies upon request.
Can Shareguard File Transfer be integrated into websites so visitors can transfer large files via the website?
Not yet, but we can provide such integrations for companies upon request.
Can I share files with people who do not yet have a Shareguard File Transfer account?
You can do so with limitations:
- Files are end-to-end encrypted.
- If the recipient does not yet have an account, we don’t have their encryption key.
- Such a contact is labelled “Unverified.” We send them an invitation to create an account and encryption key.
- Once they sign up, they become a verified contact, and you can share files securely.
Can I share multiple files with multiple people?
Yes:
- Each file is encrypted and shared individually.
- You can upload multiple files at once and share or revoke access individually.
- Future releases will support group sharing (e.g., folders or file sets).
- For now, you can use a
.zipor.tararchive to combine multiple files.
Are files transfers scanned for viruses?
No. Files are end-to-end encrypted:
- Encrypted in the sender’s browser
- Decrypted only by the recipient
Since we never access the unencrypted files, we cannot scan them for viruses.
Recommendation: Only download from trusted sources and scan received files using your local antivirus software.
